Border of Three Counties

It can be tricky sometimes knowing which county we belong to in terms of services as we are on the border of 3 counties - Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire so most of us use services from all three at different times.

Note our postcode is PE8 - which makes our postal address Peterborough and yet Peterborough is in Cambridgeshire.

  • Oundle in Northamptonshire (five minutes drive away) is nearest market town with supermarket, a local market, nurseries, secondary schools, doctors, dentists and library all at hand.
  • Peterborough in Cambridgeshire is our nearest large city (15 minutes drive from here). This is the nearest centre for a large shopping centre, mainline train station, cinema, hospital etc.

  • Stamford (20 minutes drive away) is another market town in Lincolnshire, slightly larger than Oundle but with similar facilities and also has its own train station. Lincolnshire County Council Information.

The Role of a Parish Council

Civic Parishes are the smallest areas of administration in England and provide the statutory tier of local government closest to the people. A local council, a town or parish council, is a statutory local authority set up under the Local Government Act 1894, which sought to separate the governance of a parished area from the Church of England. Other acts of parliament have expanded the role of parish councils

Local Councils are separate stand-alone bodies – they are not accountable to Unitary or County or District councils.  Local councils are an essential part of the structure of local democracy and have a vital role in acting on behalf of the community they represent. A council is an executive body and has a number of powers, some of which are obligatory, while others are optional.

These powers relate essentially to local matters, such as looking after community open spaces, allotments, closed churchyards, cemeteries, festivals, fireworks, play areas and much more. The Council also has the power to raise money through taxation, the precept.

The Council also: Gives views, on behalf of the community, on planning applications and other proposals that affect the parish;  Undertakes schemes and projects that benefit local residents; Works in partnership with other bodies to achieve benefits for the parish; Alerts relevant authorities to problems that arise or work that needs to be undertaken; Helps the other tiers of local government keep in touch with the local communities; Articulates the needs and wishes of its community; Works closely with voluntary groups in its community; Encouraging solutions to community issues; Acts as an information point for the community

Warmington Parish Council has 9 members, elected for a term of office every four years. The parish councillors do not receive an allowance, although they are entitled to.  The council employs a clerk who executes the council’s decisions and manages all administration and day-to-day workings of the council.

As the parish councillors are unpaid they represent the best value and least bureaucratic kind of local authority. Councillors are elected by the residents of the parish to serve and administer the needs of the local community.  The Parish Council frequently leads on projects benefiting the local community, drawing on its extensive local knowledge and understanding of the well-being needs of the local community, with the resources to take the initiative.

If you would like to know more about the Parish Council or wish to become a councillor please feel free to contact any of the existing parish councillors or the clerk.    #
